Step by Step SEO Part 8

By on 12/29/2011

So last week in Step by Step SEO Part 7, we set up webmaster tools, reviewed a WebCEO report and set up a WordPress blog on our own domain.  This week we are setting up a few plugins, categories and tags in our WordPress blog.

First, lets find those important plugins to install.  If you dont know how to set up plugins in WordPress, its easy.  First click Appearance > Plugins > Add New.

Install WordPress Plugin

Were going to install a Google SEO plugin, so type Google All In One SEO Pack in the search box and hit search.  You will pull up the results. Then click install and follow the prompts. We will also install a new plugin I found called Tag Grouping.  This will help manage your tag entry so you dont have to manually enter them all.

So we have been viewing reports from WebCEO, Google Analytics and Webmaster tools over the last few weeks. We have a core group of keywords we are ready to set up in the blog.  First we are going to set up our Categories to use.  You do that by clicking Post > Categories.  Were going to group these by major categories we are going to post about.

After categories are set up, we will set up tags.  You will do that in Post > Tags.  The tags are going to be very specific keywords that we will group into categories.  So we will have high level categories we set up above, then we will have specific keywords (or tags) that we will group with each post.  Also, tags will be connected with All In One SEO Pack as meta keywords.  So this organizational step will pay off big time!

Now lets get to the post.  You probably know how to post to your blog. If not, we have a “How to Post on Your WordPress Blog” video to help.   We have set up the category for this post using keywords from our report findings (in the step above).  When we select our category, the category is made part of the URL.  Having these keywords in the URL is very important.  It helps the search engines categorize search terms and will help this page rank higher for the specific term.

Next we are assigning our tag group to the post.  We are using Google All in One SEO Pack, so our tags are listed on the page, PLUS they are assigned to the meta keywords in the coding, so you get a double shot here.

So using Categories and Tags, along with a couple plugins, we have taken our blog post to the next level.  We have really optimized this post for a set of terms.  We can also take this post up a notch by optimizing the content as well, but for now we have to concentrate on getting a few post under the belt to make our blog look full.  We can always come back and optimize the post content after it has ran for a few weeks.

Let me know your tips and trick on blog post optimization.  I’d love to hear what you do.
