What Is Mobilegeddon? Google’s Mobile Friendly Algorithm Update

By on 04/30/2015

On April 21st, Google launched it’s latest algorithm change that will effect how websites rank.  This new mobile friendly ranking change is based on making the user experience better as more and more people use and search for websites on mobile devices.

Back in November of 2014, Google took a step in this direction when they released this statement:

Have you ever tapped on a Google Search result on your mobile phone, only to find yourself looking at a page where the text was too small, the links were tiny, and you had to scroll sideways to see all the content? This usually happens when the website has not been optimized to be viewed on a mobile phone.

This can be a frustrating experience for our mobile searchers. Starting today, to make it easier for people to find the information that they’re looking for, we’re adding a “mobile-friendly” label to our mobile search results.

To further build on this, Google released this blog post in February 2015 warning website owners of the mobile friendly changes to come in SEO:

When it comes to search on mobile devices, users should get the most relevant and timely results, no matter if the information lives on mobile-friendly web pages or apps. As more people use mobile devices to access the internet, our algorithms have to adapt to these usage patterns.

If you don’t know if this change will effect your website, you can use Google’s mobile friendly testing site.  If your site does not pass the test, you will lose rankings in search results compared to websites that are mobile friendly.  If you are on page three for search, it may not make that much of a difference with leads and your internet marketing strategy.  If you are on the first page of search results and your website is not mobile friendly, you could fall to page two, which would make a dramatic impact on generated leads and visibility.
