Rising (and Falling) Search Traffic

By on 07/7/2016

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is almost as hot a topic as the rise of data analytics in the marketing world. But what does it really mean? SEO drives traffic from organic search results on search engines like Google, plain and simple. With nearly 65 percent of searches taking place on Google, SEO is pretty important! So how do you manage the hot and not so hot periods of SEO? Let’s find out!

Search Engines Are Smart, But Not MENSA Smart

The Internet is available in almost every developed country across the globe, so you’ll be hard pressed to find someone that doesn’t know how to work Google or Bing. These particular search engines dominate search results and are actually pretty smart. However, they’re not smart enough to pick the content users always want without a little help. This is where SEO comes in.

Done properly, SEO can yield thousands of visits to your site. It can also boost your rankings, which means that your content is put where viewers can see it. Space is tight, so having the right SEO is crucial.

No Strategy, No Rewards

SEO has become an integral part of successful marketing strategies and requires just as much work as the rest of your marketing efforts. If you don’t have a plan, you’re not going to reap the benefits that SEO can offer your business. Entrepreneur suggests you do your homework and create a strategy.

The most important part of SEO is the keywords you choose. Having keywords that are broad or irrelevant isn’t going to yield much benefit. Consider how you personally shop and make sure your keywords mimic this. Are you going to search for running shoes with the words “world’s best-ever made shoes for running?” No. So don’t have keywords that sound like they’re straight out of a poorly-crafted TV ad.

Know How Your Site Works

This may seem obvious, but what we’re getting at is the internal workings of your website. According to Entrepreneur, search engines crawl your page to determine how important each page is. Want to increase the importance? Have content linked back to pages on your website. And often.

Another less obvious way your site can affect SEO rankings is by how fast it loads. From a consumer standpoint, you’ll lose conversions if they’re waiting too long for your page to load. The same goes for the business side. According to Entrepreneur, a “one-second increase in page-load speed would cost a company $1.6 billion in lost sales per year!” Long story short, get rid of code slowing down your site and start raking in the dough!
