Create Something Spectacular

The New Year calls for a little creative problem solving and a lot of courage

My philosophy has always circled around the art of creative problem solving. My career actually began by being the ‘ I don’t know how to do it, well….I’ll figure it out’ diva. Yet, in the real world I’ve found that my approach is quite a foreign one. Instead, I hear ‘that’s not my job’ or ‘I don’t know how to do that so, guess what…. I won’t.’

Well, my friends, the New Year is here and I declare it the year of creating something. In 2013 I propose that we start discussing why an idea will work rather than focusing on why it may not. I challenge employees to find the guts and determination to attempt to think differently. I suggest that small business owners harness problem solving skills, embrace authenticity and look within to create something new for their business.

One of my favorite authors, Seth Godin, says it best, “the problem with competition is that it takes away the requirement to set your own path, to invent your own method, to find a new way.” Now, isn’t that the truth? Time and time again we revert back to what has been done rather than creating something new, something different, something that has the possibility of failing. Instead of finding the courage to step outside of the box we fearfully remain in it. Yet, safety does not equal success and it definitely does not equal rewarding.

Creating work that is rewarding is the answer but it’s also the challenge. Success is found when ‘I can’t’ and ‘I won’t’ are removed from vocabularies and action is taken. Not to make something easier but instead to take the more difficult route of creating something spectacular.

Happy New Year. May it be prove to be a rewarding one.
